Getting There

  • Car

    From Bansko, drive east on Pirin Street toward E79. Continue for 9km, then turn left towards Pirin National Park. Follow the road for 5km to a parking area near Vihren Hut. Parking may cost around 5 BGN. From there, hike approximately 1.5 hours to Lake Muratovo.

  • Public Transport

    Take a bus from Sofia to Bansko (2.5-3 hours). From Bansko, take a local bus to Dobrinishte (30 minutes). From Dobrinishte, a taxi to Vihren Hut costs approximately 10-20 BGN. Alternatively, hike from Dobrinishte to Vihren Hut, then to Lake Muratovo. From Vihren Hut, it's about a 1.5-hour hike to the lake.

  • Hiking

    From Vihren Hut, follow the marked trail (white-yellow-white signs) south towards Muratovo Lake. The trail runs alongside the Banderitsa River, gradually climbing towards the lake. The last section before the lake is steep but short. The hike is approximately 2 km and takes 1-1.5 hours.

Lake Muratovo, also known as Golyamo Muratovo or Juniper Lake, is a captivating glacial lake situated at 2,230 meters above sea level in the northern part of Bulgaria's Pirin National Park. Part of the Banderishki Lakes group, it lies in a secondary cirque northeast of Muratov Peak. The lake's kidney-like shape covers 12.3 decares, with a depth of up to 3.2 meters and a water volume of 22,700 m3. The lake's crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding peaks, including Todorka Peak, creating a picturesque scene. A stream flows from the lake, forming a beautiful estuary and peninsulas between Muratov and Hvoynati peaks. The area teems with alpine flora and fauna, including the Balkan trout and various songbirds. Accessible via well-marked trails from Vihren Hut, the hike to Lake Muratovo is relatively easy, making it suitable for families and novice hikers.
