Parangalitsa Reserve, a jewel within Rila National Park, beckons travelers with its pristine landscapes and rich biodiversity. Established in 1933, it stands as Bulgaria's second-oldest nature reserve, safeguarding some of Europe's most ancient spruce forests. The name 'Parangalitsa,' derived from the Greek word for 'forbidden,' hints at its long-protected status. The reserve spans 1,509 hectares on the southwestern slopes of the Rila Mountains, ranging in altitude from 1,400 to 2,480 meters. This varied topography fosters a remarkable array of plant and animal life, including over 290 plant species and numerous fauna listed in Bulgaria's Red Book of endangered species. The towering spruce trees, some exceeding 200 years in age, create a cathedral-like atmosphere, their branches draped with beard lichen. Visitors can explore the reserve along designated trails, immersing themselves in the serene beauty of the ancient forests. The new Parangalitsa Eco Trail is designed to be accessible to persons with disabilities. Hiking through Parangalitsa offers a chance to witness the stunning panoramic views from its higher elevations. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including red deer, roe deer, brown bears, and wolves. Parangalitsa is more than just a nature reserve; it's a living testament to Bulgaria's commitment to conservation. As part of Rila National Park, it contributes to a network of protected areas dedicated to preserving the country's natural heritage. In 1977, UNESCO recognized Parangalitsa's global significance, designating it as a biosphere reserve under its 'Man and Biosphere' program.
