Overview
Cape Kaliakra, meaning 'Beautiful Headland,' is a captivating destination on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, located 12 km southeast of Kavarna. This narrow, rocky peninsula juts out 2 km into the sea, with cliffs plunging 70 meters to the waves below. The area is a nature and archaeological reserve, blending dramatic landscapes with a rich history spanning millennia.Originally settled by the Thracian tribe of Tirisi in the 4th century BC, the cape has been a strategic stronghold for Romans, Byzantines, and Bulgarians. The remains of ancient fortresses, walls, and buildings offer glimpses into its past. Legends abound, including the tale of 40 Bulgarian maidens who leapt to their deaths to avoid Ottoman capture, and the story of St. Nicholas, patron saint of sailors, whose escape from the Ottomans led to the cape's formation.Today, visitors can explore the archaeological reserve, wander through the ruins, and visit a small museum housed in a cave, showcasing artifacts discovered on the site. The cape is also a haven for wildlife, including nesting European shags and dolphins in the sea. The Via Pontica, a major bird migratory route, passes through Kaliakra, making it a prime spot for birdwatching in the autumn. The strong coastal winds also power nearby windmills, adding a modern element to the historical landscape.
