Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start your journey from Northeast Bulgaria by getting onto the E79 highway. Drive south towards Dupnitsa. Once you reach Dupnitsa, follow the signs for Rila Monastery. You will take the road leading to Rila Monastery, which is well-marked. The entire drive from Dupnitsa to Rila Monastery will take approximately 30 minutes. Please note that parking is available at the monastery, but there may be a small fee for parking.

• Bus

  If you prefer public transportation, you can take a bus from major cities in Northeast Bulgaria, such as Varna or Shumen, to Dupnitsa. The bus journey can take approximately 3-4 hours. Once in Dupnitsa, you can transfer to a local bus that goes directly to Rila Monastery. The local bus ride will last around 30 minutes. Check the bus schedules in advance as they may vary, and be prepared for a small fare for both the intercity and local buses.

• Taxi

  For a more direct route, you can hire a taxi from Dupnitsa to Rila Monastery. This option is more expensive, typically costing around 30-50 BGN, but it is the quickest way to reach the monastery. Make sure to negotiate the fare or ask for the meter to be used.

• Walking

  For the adventurous traveler, if you are already in the nearby village of Rila, you can hike to the monastery. The trail is about 3 km and takes roughly 1 hour on foot. This picturesque walk allows you to enjoy the surrounding nature and the beautiful landscapes of the Rila Mountains.
