Discover more about Belintash

Belintash, meaning "clever stone" or "stone of knowledge" in ancient Turkic languages, is a remarkable natural and historical site in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria. This elongated rock plateau, approximately 750 meters long and up to 50 meters wide, rises about 50 meters above the surrounding terrain, offering a breathtaking 360-degree panorama. Archaeologists believe that Belintash was a significant Thracian sanctuary, possibly dedicated to the god Sabazios, worshipped by the Bessi tribe who inhabited the region in the 5th century BC. A silver votive tablet of the deity was discovered at the foot of the cliff, supporting this theory. Some researchers suggest that Belintash may have served as a solar observatory and a place for predicting the future through fiery altars and stellar observations. The plateau is marked with carved round holes, trails, niches, and steps, which some interpret as a stellar map dating back 7,000 years. Two rock-hewn wells, which never dry out, and what appear to be stone seats are also present. The site is shrouded in myths and legends, with some claiming it was once the landing spot of Noah's Ark or that it holds hidden Thracian treasures. Belintash is also known for its strong energy field, attracting those seeking spiritual experiences. The unique rock formations, shaped by volcanic activity and erosion, provide a stunning backdrop for hiking and exploration. The area is a nesting site for various bird species, including the Alpine swift and Red-rumped Swallow.
