Rila, derived from the Thracian word for "well-watered mountain," stands as Bulgaria's most imposing and breathtaking natural wonder. Located approximately 70 km south of Sofia, this mountain range is the highest in Bulgaria and the entire Balkan Peninsula, with its peak, Musala, reaching 2,925 meters. Rila's beauty lies in its alpine landscapes shaped by ancient glaciers, which have carved out dramatic cirques, sharp peaks and valleys, and left behind nearly 200 pristine glacial lakes. The Rila National Park, encompassing a large part of the mountain, protects diverse ecosystems and provides habitats for various wildlife species. Hiking trails abound, catering to all skill levels, from leisurely strolls to challenging treks to the summit of Musala or around the famous Seven Rila Lakes. These lakes, each with its unique charm, are a must-see. Rila is also steeped in history and culture. The Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site nestled in the foothills, is Bulgaria's largest and most important monastery, founded in the 10th century by Saint John of Rila. Its stunning architecture, intricate frescoes, and serene atmosphere attract visitors from around the world. Rila offers a unique blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and cultural exploration.
