Discover more about Castle Ustra

Castle Ustra, a medieval fortress, is situated in the eastern Rhodope Mountains in southern Bulgaria. The fortress's ruins lie 4 kilometers (2.5 mi) southwest of Ustren village, perched on a hill at approximately 800 meters (2,600 ft) above sea level. As one of the highest and best-preserved fortifications in the mountain range, Ustra offers visitors a unique blend of historical exploration and scenic beauty. Constructed in the 10th century AD, Castle Ustra was built to safeguard a vital trade route. Throughout its history, the fortress was a strategic point of contention between the Byzantine and Bulgarian Empires, frequently changing hands between the two powers from the 12th to 14th centuries. The fortress was captured by the armies of Simeon the Great (r. 893-927), but after his death, it was among the lands given back to Byzantium in return for recognition of the imperial title of the Bulgarian rulers. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this once-mighty fortress, including well-preserved walls reaching up to 8 meters in some places. The fortress complex covers an area of 1,286 square meters, with the fortress wall stretching 113 meters in length. The climb to the top is rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding verdant valleys and rugged mountains.
