Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the city of Smolyan. Head south on the main road (E864) towards the Smolyan Lakes area. Continue driving for about 5 kilometers until you reach the marked turnoff for Smolyan Fortress. The fortress is located on a hillside, and you will see signs pointing you towards the parking area. There is no entry fee for parking, but please note that the road may be narrow and winding as you approach the fortress.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a bus from Smolyan's main bus station to the Smolyan Lakes area. Buses run several times a day, and the fare is typically around 1.50 BGN (Bulgarian Lev). Once you arrive at the Smolyan Lakes stop, you can either walk (approximately 30 minutes uphill) or take a taxi to the fortress. Taxis are available at the bus stop and should cost around 10-15 BGN for the short ride.
Walking
If you prefer to hike to Smolyan Fortress, you can start from the center of Smolyan. The walk is about 3 kilometers and will take approximately 45 minutes. Follow the signs for the Smolyan Lakes, and once you reach the lakes, continue on the trail that leads uphill towards the fortress. The trail is well-marked and offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
