The Deaf Stones: An Ancient Thracian Sanctuary

The Deaf Stones, or Gluhite Kamani, stand as a testament to Bulgaria's rich history and the enduring connection between nature and humanity. This ancient Thracian sanctuary, located near the village of Malko Gradishte in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains, is a complex of four huge rock blocks with various shapes carved into them. These rocks, rising from the thick forest, create a strange silence, absorbing sound and eliminating echoes, hence the name 'Deaf Stones'.The site dates back to the early Iron Age (12th-6th centuries BC) and was used during Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The Thracians, an ancient civilization that inhabited these lands, are believed to have used the rocks for religious and burial rituals. Hundreds of trapezoidal niches are carved into the 30-meter-high rocks, their purpose still a mystery, though likely ritualistic. Some believe they were used to hold funeral urns.At the foot of the rocks, megalithic tombs are carved, with steps leading to the top of the granite rock, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Rhodope Mountains and the Ivaylovgrad Dam. The site is not only a historical landmark but also a place of natural beauty, with well-marked trails for hiking and exploring the unique flora and fauna.
