Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the town of Rila. Head south on the main road (E79) towards the Rila Monastery. Follow the signs for Rila Monastery, which is approximately 14 km from Rila town. The drive takes around 20-30 minutes. There is a parking lot available near the monastery, which costs about 5 BGN (Bulgarian Lev) for the day.
Public Transportation
To reach Rila Monastery via public transportation, take a bus from Sofia to Rila. Buses depart from the Sofia Central Bus Station. The journey takes approximately 2-3 hours, and tickets cost around 10 BGN. Once you arrive in Rila, you can take a local minibus or taxi to Rila Monastery, which is about 14 km away. Minibus fares are typically around 3-5 BGN.
Taxi
For a more direct route, consider taking a taxi from Rila town to Rila Monastery. This option is convenient if you have luggage or prefer not to take public transport. The taxi ride will take around 20-30 minutes and should cost approximately 20-30 BGN, depending on the time of day and taxi company.
Hiking
If you are already in the Rila Mountains and wish to hike to Rila Monastery, there are several trails available. Starting from the area around the Seven Rila Lakes, take the marked trail leading to Rila Monastery. The hike is approximately 20 km and can take 5-6 hours, depending on your pace. Make sure to bring enough water and snacks for the journey.
