Discover more about Cherven medieval town

Cherven, meaning 'red' in Bulgarian, was one of the Second Bulgarian Empire's most significant military, administrative, economic, and cultural centers between the 12th and 14th centuries. The town is located approximately 30 km south of Ruse, within the Rusenski Lom Nature Park. The area has been inhabited since the Thracians, with the town succeeding a 6th-century Byzantine fortress. Cherven gained importance in 1235 when it became the seat of the Bulgarian Orthodox Bishopric. The town flourished as a center for craftsmanship, including iron extraction, ironworking, goldsmithing, construction, and arts. It also served as a vital road junction connecting the Danube River to the country's interior, making it a key trade hub. The stronghold consisted of an inner city (citadel) on a high rocky plateau and an outer city at the foot of the rocks. It boasted a complex fortification system. In 1388, the Ottoman Turks conquered Cherven, leading to its decline. Archaeological excavations have uncovered a castle, fortress walls, two underground water supply passages, 13 to 16 churches, public and administrative buildings, and numerous artifacts. Today, Cherven is an archaeological reserve, offering visitors a chance to explore medieval Bulgarian culture.
