Discover more about Orlova Chuka Cave

Orlova Chuka Cave, situated near the village of Pepelina and approximately 40 km south of Ruse, is a captivating natural landmark and one of Bulgaria's most fascinating cave systems. The cave's name, translating to "Eagle's Rock," is derived from the rocky ridge above its entrance, once a haven for eagles. Discovered in 1941 by a local shepherd, the cave was later developed for tourism with the construction of 124 stone steps and an artificial entrance in 1959. Today, around 3 km of the upper level is accessible to visitors, showcasing a mesmerizing underworld of geological formations. Inside, the cave maintains a constant temperature of around 14°C (57°F), providing a refreshing escape from the summer heat. The cave is adorned with a variety of stalactites, stalagmites, and sinter ponds, formed over millennia by the deposition of limestone minerals. Notable formations include the Great Stalactite in the Concert Hall, which stands 3.5 meters tall, and the picturesque sinter lakes in the Great Gallery. The Concert Hall got its name after the Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra held a concert there in 1976, taking advantage of the hall's natural acoustics. Orlova Chuka also holds historical significance, with evidence suggesting human habitation during the Paleolithic and Eneolithic periods. Archaeological findings include flint knives, spearheads, and pottery fragments. The cave is also home to various bat species, some of which are unique to Europe. Visitors can explore the cave on guided tours, which take approximately 40 minutes and depart every hour. The tour guides lead visitors through the cave's various halls and galleries, explaining the history, geology, and ecology of this subterranean wonderland.
