Medi Valley Winery: A Taste of Bulgarian Terroir

Medi Valley Winery, established in 2007 in the village of Smochevo, is a modern winery complex that stands as a testament to Bulgaria's rich winemaking heritage. Situated at the foot of the Rila Mountains, 630 meters above sea level, it lies in the northernmost part of the Struma River Valley. This location is on the picturesque road to the Rila Monastery, making it a convenient stop for those exploring the region. The winery's name pays homage to the Thracian tribe 'Medi,' who inhabited the Struma River Valley thousands of years ago and were known for their advanced viticulture. Medi Valley boasts 370 acres of vineyards, planted with varieties like Chardonnay, Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards' southwestern orientation, combined with alluvial cinnamon and lawn soils, creates a unique terroir that influences the character of the wines. In 2010, Medi Valley launched a new concept focused on creating terroir-driven wines with individual style and character. The winery welcomes visitors daily, offering wine tastings in its wine bar and on a panoramic terrace with views of the Rila Mountains. The production area includes grape processing, vinification, wine storage, and bottling sections. The cellar houses wines aging in barriques under optimal conditions. Medi Valley has garnered recognition at national and international competitions, solidifying its reputation as a charming destination for wine tourism.
