Discover more about Katina Pyramids

The Katina Pyramids, located 20 kilometers north of Sofia, are a captivating natural phenomenon sculpted by the elements over millennia. These formations, found near the village of Katina on the southern slopes of the Balkan Mountains, are the result of erosion acting upon delluvial soils. The reddish-brown pyramids, scattered in several groups, rise from the lush vegetation of the Golemiya Dol area, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding landscape. Declared a natural landmark in 1962, the Katina Pyramids stand as a testament to the power of nature and its artistic touch. While the cliffs where they are located may reach heights of 5-10 meters, the pyramids themselves are generally no more than 2 meters tall. The area is steeped in local folklore, with stories passed down through generations, adding a layer of cultural intrigue to the geological wonder. Visitors can explore the area via well-marked trails, offering opportunities for hiking and photography. The paths provide access to various groups of earth formations, allowing visitors to appreciate the unique shapes and colors up close. The most attractive pyramids are located in the valley of "Golemiyat dol", though natural reforestation has decreased their size and number in recent years. Despite this, the site remains a beautiful and tranquil destination for those seeking a connection with nature.
