The site's strategic importance dates back to the late 7th century when it became a vital stronghold during the First Bulgarian Empire. Throughout its history, Markeli frequently changed hands between Bulgarians and Byzantines, serving as a launchpad for military campaigns. Archaeological research indicates that the castle was constructed in Late Antiquity, during the early Byzantine period. The fortifications, built from crushed stones and bricks, are believed to have been erected between the late 5th and mid-6th centuries. Within the fortress, a large three-nave basilica was built, with a discovered martyrium in its basement, revealing an early Christian tomb.
