Markeli: A Journey Through Bulgarian History

Markeli, located approximately 7.5 kilometers (4.7 miles) from Karnobat in southeastern Bulgaria, is a historically significant fortress that once marked the frontier between the Byzantine and Bulgarian empires. The site's strategic importance dates back to the late 7th century when it became a vital stronghold during the First Bulgarian Empire. Throughout its history, Markeli frequently changed hands between Bulgarians and Byzantines, serving as a launchpad for military campaigns. Archaeological research indicates that the castle was constructed in Late Antiquity, during the early Byzantine period. The fortifications, built from crushed stones and bricks, are believed to have been erected between the late 5th and mid-6th centuries. Within the fortress, a large three-nave basilica was built, with a discovered martyrium in its basement, revealing an early Christian tomb. Markeli's location near the Mochuritsa River was chosen to defend the Rish and Varbitsa mountain passes, forming part of a chain of Bulgarian fortifications leading to Pliska. Today, visitors to Markeli can explore the extensive ruins and envision the area's rich past. The remains of the fortifications, including ramparts and a defensive tower, offer insights into the site's military significance. The visitor center in Karnobat features a multimedia presentation, a model of the fortress, and reproductions of medieval clothing and weapons. The fortress also hosts historical reenactments, bringing the past to life.
