Begliktash, one of the largest Thracian sanctuaries, is situated in the Strandzha Mountain region near the Black Sea, approximately 4 km south of Primorsko, Bulgaria. The sanctuary, located on the highest part of Maslen Cape, was a significant religious center, with its origins linked to sun and moon worship. The Thracians believed the site was connected to the sacred energy of nature and used it for religious ceremonies and secret cults.Discovered in 2003, the site was previously inaccessible as it was part of Todor Zhivkov's Perla hunting residence during the Communist era. Archaeological excavations revealed that Begliktash was used for rituals from the 2nd century BC to the 4th century AD. The sanctuary consists of massive stone blocks arranged in specific formations that stimulate the mind and imagination. Some stones resemble star constellations, adding to the site's mystical character.Visitors can explore various marked locations among the stones, including the Marriage Bed, Altar, Throne, and the Labyrinth, a system of rock corridors used for spiritual initiation. The site is believed to grant wishes, with many believing the energy emanating from the rocks can bring about positive change. The name 'Begliktash' comes from Turkish, meaning 'sheep's tax rock,' referring to the practice of collecting sheep tax during Ottoman rule. Today, efforts are underway to preserve the sanctuary and promote sustainable tourism, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the ancient Thracian history and the unique energy of the place.
