Tsarevets Fortress, located in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, is a historically significant medieval stronghold. The earliest signs of habitation on the hill date back to 4200 BC. The fortress was the primary stronghold of the Second Bulgarian Empire, serving as its capital from 1185 to 1393. During this time, it was a bustling center of political, cultural, and religious activity.Occupying a strategic position on Tsarevets Hill, 206 meters above sea level, the fortress is surrounded by imposing walls and towers. The fortress has three entrances, with the main entrance located on the easternmost side of the hill. The castle complex includes a throne hall, a castle church, and the king's chamber. The Patriarchate complex sits atop the hill and features the Cathedral of the Ascension of the Lord, reconstructed in 1981. Visitors can explore the remains of over 400 houses and 18 churches. The fortress has been rebuilt and fortified multiple times, including by the Byzantines in the 5th-7th centuries AD. In the 20th century, significant restoration projects were undertaken, including the restoration of the Patriarch's Palace and Baldwin's Tower. Today, Tsarevets is a popular tourist attraction, offering panoramic views of Veliko Tarnovo and the Yantra River.
