Discover more about Aladzha Monastery

Aladzha Monastery, meaning 'motley' in Persian-Arabic, is a fascinating medieval cave monastery dating back to the 13th-14th centuries. Located 14 km north of Varna within the Golden Sands Nature Park, it offers a glimpse into the lives of hermit monks who once inhabited these caves. The monastery is carved into a nearly 40-meter-high limestone rock and consists of two levels. The first level houses a monastery church, monastic cells, a dining area, a kitchen, a small cemetery church, a crypt (bone-vault), and farm premises. The second level features a natural cave recess with a monastery chapel. Visitors can explore these chambers and admire the remnants of medieval frescoes that hint at the monastery's artistic past. Approximately 600-700 meters west of the monastery lies a group of caves known as the Catacombs. Archaeological discoveries, including ceramics, coins, and graffiti, suggest that these catacombs were inhabited during the early Christian era (5th-6th centuries). After Bulgaria fell under Ottoman rule in the late 14th century, Aladzha Monastery gradually declined and was likely abandoned in the 15th-16th centuries. Today, it stands as a cultural monument, attracting visitors with its historical significance and tranquil setting. A museum on-site displays artifacts and provides insights into the monastery's history and the practices of Orthodox Christianity in Bulgaria.
