The site's name, Karaach Teke, loosely translates to 'tomb by the two elms'. The monastery's construction is attributed to Prince Boris I Michael the Baptist, dating back to the late 9th and early 10th centuries. It was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and remained active until the 18th century. Archaeological excavations, initiated in 1921 by Karel Shkorpil, have revealed a unique layout with no known аналог in Bulgarian or Byzantine architectural traditions. The complex includes a large monastery church of the Atonian type, a massive tower with a chapel, a scriptorium spanning 400 square meters, a library, monastic dormitories, and workshops. Discoveries include Bulgarian, Serbian, Byzantine, Turkish, and Venetian coins, offering insights into the region's diverse history. The site is considered to have been one of the first literary centers in medieval Bulgaria.
