Discover more about Varna Zoo

Varna Zoo, or Zoopark Varna, offers a charming and nostalgic experience for animal lovers of all ages. Established in 1961, the zoo is located within Varna's Sea Garden, the largest landscaped park in the Balkans. The zoo's origins trace back to 1956 when sailors gifted a bear named Maxim, who became the first resident. Today, Varna Zoo houses over 60 species of animals, including mammals, birds and reptiles. Visitors can see animals such as lions, tigers, kangaroos, llamas, panthers, pink pelicans and peacocks. The zoo also participates in conservation efforts, caring for 17 protected species listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria. The zoo's design includes water features, such as three cascading lakes that provide a habitat for water birds. While the zoo may have a retro, communist-era aesthetic, it is well-maintained and provides an affordable and interesting experience for families. Visitors can easily spend a day exploring the zoo and enjoying the surrounding Sea Garden, which offers picturesque walking paths, playgrounds, and views of the Black Sea.
