Botanical Garden of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

The Botanical Garden of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, located at the foot of Vitosha Mountain, offers a serene escape into the world of plants. Established in 1882 as the Prince's Botanical Garden, it has evolved into a leading center for botanical research, conservation, and education. The garden plays a vital role in advancing botanical science in Bulgaria and the broader Balkan region. Spanning a considerable area, the garden showcases over 4,500 plant species and forms, representing more than 1% of the world's embryophytes. Visitors can explore thematic sections, including greenhouses with tropical and subtropical plants like orchids, palms, and cacti, a rosarium with over 40 rose varieties, and a Mediterranean area evoking the landscapes of Greece and Italy. There's also an Alpineum with high-mountain flora and a Pharmacy Garden displaying medicinal plants. The garden actively contributes to plant conservation and collaborates with international institutions. It also serves as a rescue center for seized plants under the Convention on Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). As part of Sofia's green system, the garden provides a space for recreation and education, hosting events and exhibitions throughout the year.
