Rusizi National Park: A Riverfront Haven

Rusizi National Park, also known as Parc National de la Rusizi, is a relatively small but ecologically significant protected area in Burundi. Established in 1980, the park encompasses approximately 50-100 square kilometers and is situated 15 kilometers north of Bujumbura, making it easily accessible. The park's main feature is the Rusizi River, which flows into Lake Tanganyika and forms part of the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is divided into two main sections: the larger section on the eastern bank of the Rusizi River, characterized by floodplains, grasslands, acacia trees, and shrubs; and the Rusizi River Delta, where the river meets Lake Tanganyika, featuring small islands, channels, and papyrus beds. This diverse environment supports a variety of wildlife, including hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, and monkeys. Rusizi is also a major birding destination, with over 200 species of birds, including migratory species. Visitors can explore the park through boat tours on the Rusizi River, offering opportunities to see hippos, crocodiles, and various waterbirds. Guided walks and game drives are also available, providing chances to spot plains game and explore the park's diverse habitats. The park also holds cultural and historical significance, with remnants of a colonial-era hydroelectric dam and a cemetery for European settlers and soldiers from World War I. While lacking accommodation within the park itself, numerous hotels and lodges are available on the outskirts.
