Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the main town of Vila do Maio. Head southwest on the main road (the only main road) towards Praia. As you approach the southern coast, look for signs indicating 'Lighthouse Dona Maria Pia.' The lighthouse is located on the coast, and you will need to turn off the main road onto a smaller path leading directly to the lighthouse. The journey should take approximately 20-30 minutes depending on road conditions.
Public Transportation
For public transportation, catch a local taxi (also known as 'almocar') from Vila do Maio to the lighthouse. These taxis usually wait near the town square. Confirm with the driver that they will take you to 'Lighthouse Dona Maria Pia.' The fare should be around 500 CVE (Cape Verdean Escudo), but it's good to negotiate the price beforehand. The ride will take about 30-40 minutes. Alternatively, you can ask the driver to drop you off at the nearest point to the lighthouse if they cannot go directly.
Walking
If you prefer to walk and are staying nearby, you can take a scenic route from Vila do Maio to the lighthouse. Follow the coastal path south, enjoying views of the ocean and the local flora. This walk can take about 1.5 to 2 hours, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Make sure to follow the path that runs parallel to the coast to avoid getting lost.
Use Lighthouse Dona Maria Pia as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
