Baía do Inferno, translated as "Bay of Hell," is a breathtaking national reserve located on the southwest coast of Santiago Island in Cape Verde. Despite its daunting name, it's a place of serene beauty, characterized by dramatic cliffs rising over 400 meters from the Atlantic Ocean. The bay is part of the Important Bird Area known as "Coastal cliffs between Porto Mosquito and Baia do Inferno".
The reserve is home to unique flora and fauna, making it perfect for eco-tourism and wildlife observation. Birdlife International has identified this area as an IBA, noting that the cliffs support 25–30 breeding pairs of red-billed tropicbirds and the largest colony of brown boobies in Cape Verde.
Visitors can enjoy hiking along the rugged coastline, soaking in the scenic views, or engaging in activities like snorkeling and kayaking in the crystalline waters. Walking
If you are near Praia de Atalaia, you can walk to Baía do Inferno. Follow the coastal path heading towards the cliffs. It is a scenic route, but make sure to wear comfortable shoes and carry water, as it can take up to 30 minutes depending on your pace. There are no entrance fees for walking this route.
Public Transport
Take a local bus from Praia de Atalaia to the nearest town (check the schedule for specific times). Once in the nearest town, you may need to take a taxi or a shared minibus (aluguer) to reach Baía do Inferno. The total cost for the bus ride is typically around 1-2 CVE, and the taxi may cost around 5-10 CVE, depending on the distance.

From Praia de Atalaia, head northwest on the main road (Estrada de Atalaia) towards the junction with Estrada de Ponta do Sol. Continue straight for approximately 15 km. Look for signs directing you to Baía do Inferno. There is usually no parking fee, but ensure your vehicle is parked securely.
