Discover more about American Conservatory Theater

The American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) stands as a cultural cornerstone in San Francisco, offering a rich tapestry of theatrical performances and training programs. Founded in 1965 by William Ball, A.C.T. began in Pittsburgh before relocating to San Francisco in 1967. Since then, it has been engaging the spirit of the San Francisco Bay Area, activating stories that resonate, promoting a diversity of voices and points of view, and empowering theater makers and audiences to celebrate liveness. A.C.T.'s primary home is the Toni Rembe Theater, formerly known as the Geary Theater, located in the heart of San Francisco's Theater District. The building itself is a historical landmark, dating back to 1910 and designed in the Classical Revival and Late Victorian styles by Walter D. Bliss and William B. Faville. The theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and designated an official San Francisco Landmark in 1976. The Toni Rembe Theater was hailed as the “perfect playhouse” after it was rebuilt following the 1906 earthquake and fire. Besides its mainstage productions, A.C.T. is also known for its comprehensive acting school. The school offers a range of programs, including the Young Conservatory for young people and a Master of Fine Arts program. Notable alumni include Denzel Washington, Annette Bening, Elizabeth Banks, and Benjamin Bratt. A.C.T. has also opened the Strand Theater, which is used to present educational workshops, cabaret performances and specially commissioned new works, as well as productions connected to their M.F.A. and Young Conservatory programs. Attending a performance at A.C.T. is more than just seeing a show; it's an immersive cultural experience. The theater is located in the Union Square area, close to public transportation, hotels, restaurants, and other cultural attractions.
