    Discover more about Oakland Zoo

The Oakland Zoo, located in the scenic Oakland Hills within 525-acre Knowland Park, has been a beloved Bay Area institution since 1922. Founded by naturalist Henry A. Snow, the zoo started as a small collection and has evolved into a leading center for animal welfare, conservation, and education. Managed by the Conservation Society of California, the zoo is dedicated to wildlife preservation both locally and globally. The zoo's exhibits are geographically organized, showcasing animals in habitats that mimic their native ecosystems. Popular areas include the African Savannah, home to giraffes, zebras, lions, and elephants, and the Tropical Rainforest, where white-handed gibbons swing through lush foliage. The Wayne and Gladys Valley Children's Zoo offers interactive experiences with lemurs, otters, and a petting yard. A highlight is the California Trail, opened in 2018, which focuses on California wildlife, past and present. This exhibit features native species such as grizzly bears, black bears, gray wolves, jaguars, and California condors. A scenic gondola ride transports visitors to the California Trail, offering stunning views of the San Francisco Bay Area. The Oakland Zoo is actively involved in conservation efforts, including species and habitat protection, wildlife trade mitigation, and human-wildlife coexistence. The zoo participates in rescue and rehabilitation programs, working with organizations like the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to care for animals injured by wildfires or human conflict. With a wide array of animals, interactive exhibits, and a commitment to conservation, the Oakland Zoo provides an engaging and educational experience for visitors of all ages.
