    Discover more about Pier 39

Pier 39, located along the historic San Francisco Waterfront, is the most visited destination in San Francisco, offering a vibrant mix of dining, entertainment, shopping, and attractions, all set against the backdrop of stunning views of the city and the Bay. From Pier 39, visitors can enjoy postcard-perfect views of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, Alcatraz and Angel Islands, and the famous city skyline. Originally developed by entrepreneur Warren Simmons, Pier 39 opened on October 4, 1978. Constructed using authentic 1910 wood from Piers 34 and 3, it initially featured 50 stores, 23 restaurants, a diving pool, and street performers. While the diving pool was eventually replaced by a Venetian carousel, the pier has continued to evolve, adding attractions like the Aquarium of the Bay, virtual 3D rides, and the ever-popular sea lions. One of Pier 39's most famous features is the colony of California sea lions that began gathering on the docks in September 1989. These playful marine mammals quickly became a local and international sensation, drawing crowds of visitors eager to watch them sunbathe and frolic. The sea lions, who can number over 1,000, have become a symbol of Pier 39 and a major tourist attraction. Today, Pier 39 offers a wide array of activities and attractions, including thrilling rides, escape rooms, a mirror maze, sailing charters, whale-watching tours, bike rentals, and live shows. Visitors can explore the Aquarium of the Bay, shop for unique gifts and souvenirs, and dine at a variety of restaurants offering fresh seafood and diverse cuisines. With its lively atmosphere, stunning views, and family-friendly attractions, Pier 39 is a must-see destination for anyone visiting San Francisco.
