Discover more about The Panhandle

The Panhandle, a three-quarter-mile-long and one-block-wide park in San Francisco, serves as an extension of Golden Gate Park, stretching from Stanyan Street to Baker Street. This urban oasis, bordered by Fell and Oak Streets, provides a vital green space for the surrounding neighborhoods of Haight-Ashbury and the Western Addition. Originally conceived in 1870 as part of a grander plan for Golden Gate Park, the Panhandle served as an experimental laboratory for identifying suitable vegetation to stabilize the area's shifting sand dunes. Through trial and error, park engineers transformed the landscape into a thriving arboretum, featuring diverse trees and shrubs from around the world. Today, the Panhandle's eucalyptus trees, originally from Australia, stand as some of the oldest in the park. bisected by Masonic Avenue, the Panhandle offers a variety of recreational amenities. Visitors can enjoy paved walking and biking paths, basketball courts, a playground, and an outdoor gym. The William McKinley Memorial, located at the eastern end, features a statue and seating area dedicated by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1904. The park provides a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle, inviting locals and tourists alike to stroll, picnic, and engage in outdoor activities.
