Getting There

• Walking

  From the center of Big Sur, head north on Highway 1 towards Carmel-By-The-Sea. The distance is approximately 30 miles, which may take around 1 hour to walk, depending on your pace. Follow the scenic coastline, which offers stunning views along the way. As you approach Carmel, watch for the signs indicating Carmel-By-The-Sea. Once you reach the Carmel area, continue walking along Ocean Avenue until you reach Scenic Road. Turn left onto Scenic Road, which will lead you to the Carmel Sunset Beach Viewpoint.

• Biking

  If you are biking from Big Sur, start by heading north on Highway 1. The ride is about 30 miles and has several scenic stops along the way. Ensure you follow the bike lanes where available. Upon entering Carmel-By-The-Sea, take Ocean Avenue towards the beach. As you reach Scenic Road, turn left, and continue until you see the beach viewpoint on your right.

  Start by taking a local bus service from Big Sur to Carmel-By-The-Sea. Check the schedule for the nearest bus stop and the frequency of service. Once you arrive in Carmel, walk along Ocean Avenue heading towards the coast. You will then turn left onto Scenic Road, where the Carmel Sunset Beach Viewpoint is located.

  For an adventurous option, consider hiking from Big Sur to Carmel. You can take the Pine Ridge Trail or another nearby trail that connects to the coastal pathways. This is a longer trek, around 30 miles, and should be planned with adequate supplies and time. Upon reaching Carmel, navigate down to Ocean Avenue and then follow Scenic Road towards the beach viewpoint.
