Getting There

  • Public Transport

    To reach Cowles Mountain using public transportation, take the MTS Bus Route 115. The closest bus stop to the trailhead is Jackson Drive & Golfcrest Drive, about an 11-minute walk to the trailhead. A single ride on the bus costs $2.50.

  • Walking

    From the intersection of Navajo Road and Golfcrest Drive, head north on Golfcrest Drive. The Cowles Mountain trailhead parking lot will be on your right at 7001 Golfcrest Dr. If the parking lot is full, street parking is available along Golfcrest Drive. Be mindful of traffic.

  • Taxi/Ride-share

    From downtown San Diego, a taxi or ride-share to Cowles Mountain will cost approximately $22-$30. The ride is about 13 miles and typically takes 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. Expect higher fares during peak hours.

Cowles Mountain, standing at 1,593 feet, is the highest point within the city limits of San Diego. Located in the San Carlos neighborhood and part of Mission Trails Regional Park, it's a popular destination for hikers seeking a moderately challenging climb with rewarding panoramic views.The mountain is named after George A. Cowles, a rancher and businessman who settled in the El Cajon Valley in the 1870s. He cultivated thousands of acres, growing olives, raisins, and raising thoroughbred horses. For many years, Cowles Mountain was known as "S" Mountain. In 1931, students from San Diego State University painted a large "S" on its side, a tradition that continued until the 1970s.The main trail to the summit is a 3-mile out-and-back hike. The ascent can be steep and rocky in sections, making it a moderately challenging climb. The trail is exposed with little to no shade, so it's best to hike during cooler times of the day, especially in summer. Be sure to bring water and sun protection.From the summit, hikers are treated to 360-degree views of San Diego County, including the Pacific Ocean, downtown San Diego, and even glimpses of Mexico on a clear day. The peak is a popular spot for sunrise and sunset hikes.
