Ingram Plaza, situated in the heart of Liberty Station in San Diego, is a vibrant hub with a storied past. Spanning 100,000 square feet, this park-like setting features a towering American flag, surrounded by grassy quadrants and trees.Originally part of the Naval Training Center (NTC) San Diego, which operated from 1923 to 1997, Ingram Plaza served as the initial processing point for new recruits. In the 1920s, new recruits from across America were isolated here in tent camps for three weeks. During this time, they underwent transformations, receiving haircuts, uniforms, and initial training before joining the base's regular training routines. This isolation also served to prevent the spread of contagious diseases.The plaza is dedicated to the memory of Osmond K. Ingram, a Gunner's Mate First Class who served in the United States Navy. Ingram was the first enlisted man killed in action during World War I. On October 15, 1917, while stationed on the USS Cassin, Ingram spotted an incoming torpedo and attempted to jettison ammunition to save his ship and shipmates. He was killed in the explosion and posthumously received the Congressional Medal of Honor.Today, Ingram Plaza is a versatile venue for military functions, festivals, concerts, and corporate events, with a capacity of up to 3,000 people. Its central location and proximity to parking lots make it easily accessible. The plaza also hosts events such as ArtWalk Liberty Station, showcasing visual and performing arts. A time capsule commemorating the Centennial of Liberty Station and the former Naval Training Center was buried here on October 29, 2023, and is set to be opened in 25 years.
