Car
From Palm Springs, take I-10 East towards Blythe. Merge onto CA-62 East towards 29 Palms. Continue on CA-62 until you reach the junction with CA-177 North. Take CA-177 North towards Desert Hot Springs, then merge onto I-10 East again. Exit at CA-62 East and continue until you reach the junction with CA-95. Take CA-95 South towards Blythe. Finally, take the exit for Essex Road and follow the signs to Mitchell Caverns, located at 38200 Essex Rd, Essex, CA 92332. The entire drive takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes depending on traffic. Please note that there may be a fee for parking at the caverns.
Public Transportation
To reach Mitchell Caverns via public transportation, start by taking a Greyhound bus to Blythe, CA. From Blythe, you will need to use a taxi or rideshare service to get to Essex, which is approximately 30 miles away from Blythe. Once in Essex, follow signs to Mitchell Caverns located at 38200 Essex Rd, Essex, CA 92332. Be sure to check the bus schedule for arrival times and book your taxi or rideshare in advance as options may be limited.
Biking/Walking
If you are adventurous and near Essex, you can bike or walk to the caverns. Starting from Essex, head south on Essex Road, which will lead you directly to Mitchell Caverns. Keep in mind that this may take a significant amount of time and requires preparation for desert conditions, such as water and sun protection.
