History of Sunset Strip

From County Road to Boulevard

The Sunset Strip developed along Sunset Boulevard, a historic east–west route crossing the Hollywood Hills and linking Hollywood with the western districts of Los Angeles. Unlike much of Los Angeles, the unincorporated strip was not incorporated into the City of Los Angeles when surrounding urban areas developed, leaving it outside municipal Hollywood. Its separation from Los Angeles later shaped a distinctive regulatory and commercial environment, particularly during the middle decades of the twentieth century. The opening of the Chateau Marmont in 1929 and the Sunset Tower, completed in 1931 as an apartment building, helped establish the Strip as a place associated with the film industry and affluent urban life. The Sunset Tower later became a hotel, while the Chateau Marmont retained its reputation as a discreet long-stay address for actors, writers and musicians.
