Half Moon Bay State Beach is a stunning coastal haven located approximately a half-mile west of Highway 1 on Kelly Avenue in Half Moon Bay. This expansive beach stretches for four miles, encompassing four distinct beaches: Francis, Venice, Dunes, and Roosevelt. Each beach offers unique characteristics and recreational opportunities, making it a destination with something for everyone.Francis Beach, the southernmost and most developed of the four, serves as the main hub, featuring a visitor center open on weekends, a campground with 52 sites, picnic areas, and convenient beach access. Venice Beach, located just north of Francis, offers picnic tables, outdoor showers, and restrooms. Dunes Beach, also known as Naples Beach, provides a more secluded experience with easier parking. Roosevelt Beach, the northernmost, connects to the Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail, offering scenic walking and biking opportunities. However, the parking lot, restrooms, and trash cans at Roosevelt Beach are closed until further notice due to a culvert failure.The area is rich in history, having been inhabited by the Ohlone people for thousands of years. The Spanish arrived in the late 18th century, followed by American settlers in the 1850s. During the Prohibition era, the beach's hidden coves and thick fog made it a prime location for rumrunners.Today, Half Moon Bay State Beach is a protected area within the California State Park system, offering a variety of recreational activities.
