Baker Beach, a scenic mile-long stretch of sand in San Francisco's Presidio, provides iconic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Marin Headlands, and the Pacific Ocean. This popular destination blends natural beauty with a rich history. Originally part of a military base dating back to 1812, Baker Beach was fortified in 1904 with disappearing gun installations at Battery Chamberlin, which can still be viewed today. The Presidio transitioned to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1997, making the beach accessible to the public. In the 1850s, John Henry Baker settled the 160-acre property, establishing the Golden Gate Milk Ranch. From 1986 to 1990, Baker Beach was the original home of the Burning Man art festival. Today, visitors can enjoy picnicking, sunbathing, and hiking along the coastal trails. The northern section of the beach is known as a clothing-optional area. While swimming is generally not recommended due to strong currents and cold water, Baker Beach remains a favorite spot for relaxation and recreation. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including dolphins, harbor seals, and pelicans.
