The Civic Center is easily accessible via BART and MUNI. Take any BART line to the Civic Center/UN Plaza station. MUNI Metro lines J, K, L, M, and N also stop at the Civic Center and Van Ness stations. From the station, it's a short walk to City Hall and the Civic Center Plaza. A Clipper card is recommended for ease of payment on both BART and MUNI. A one-way BART ticket from Embarcadero to Civic Center/UN Plaza costs approximately $2.15 - $3.20. A single ride on MUNI costs $3.00.

From Union Square, walk west along Market Street for approximately 1 mile. You'll pass the Orpheum Theatre on your left. Continue towards City Hall, which will become visible in the distance. Envisioning a grander future, city planners conceived a new Civic Center inspired by the City Beautiful movement, which aimed to create civic pride and improve urban life through monumental architecture and well-designed public spaces. The new Civic Center was to be completed in time for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition.The district is characterized by its formal layout, featuring two large plazas – Civic Center Plaza and United Nations Plaza – framed by iconic buildings. City Hall, completed in 1915, is the centerpiece, its magnificent dome a prominent feature of the San Francisco skyline. Other notable buildings include the War Memorial Opera House, the Veterans Building, the Main Library, and the Asian Art Museum.Civic Center has been the site of many important events.
