Fort Baker, a 335-acre parkland in Sausalito, California, offers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, and Alcatraz. Formerly a U.S. Army post, Fort Baker played a vital role in the defense of the San Francisco Bay for over a century.
Established in 1866 as a military reservation, the area was initially known as the Lime Point Military Reservation. In 1897, it was renamed Fort Baker in honor of Edward Dickinson Baker, a former U.S. Senator from Oregon who died leading Union troops in the Civil War. The early 1900s saw the construction of permanent structures, including barracks, officer's homes, and coastal artillery batteries. Fort Baker was included in a historic district listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
Today, Fort Baker is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) and offers visitors a variety of activities.
