Discover more about Golden Gate Park

Golden Gate Park, a sprawling 1,017-acre urban park in San Francisco, is a testament to human ingenuity and the power of nature. Conceived in the 1860s as San Francisco's answer to New York's Central Park, it was carved out of unpromising sand dunes and scrubland known as the 'Outside Lands'. Today, it stands as the third-most visited urban park in the United States, drawing an estimated 24 million visitors annually. The park's transformation began in 1871 under the guidance of engineer William Hammond Hall and master gardener John McLaren. Hall laid out the park's framework and initial landscaping, while McLaren dedicated his life to cultivating its diverse flora. Their vision, influenced by Frederick Law Olmsted, resulted in a landscape that blends formal gardens with naturalistic woodlands. Golden Gate Park offers a plethora of attractions and activities. Cultural institutions like the de Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences provide enriching experiences. The Japanese Tea Garden offers a tranquil escape, while the Conservatory of Flowers showcases rare tropical plants. Visitors can also enjoy recreational pursuits such as biking, boating on Stow Lake, and attending concerts and festivals. The park's history is rich and varied. It served as a refuge for residents displaced by the 1906 earthquake and fire. During the Great Depression, it provided much-needed recreation when the city ran out of funds. In more recent times, it has hosted iconic events like the Summer of Love and visits from dignitaries such as Queen Elizabeth II. Golden Gate Park continues to evolve, hosting annual music and arts festivals like Outside Lands and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass.
