Discover more about Splash Pad Park

Once a neglected space bisected by the I-580 freeway, Splash Pad Park has transformed into a thriving hub for the Grand Lake neighborhood of Oakland. Originally part of Eastshore Park, the area was divided in the 1960s, leaving a triangle-shaped plot isolated along Lake Park Avenue. Caltrans installed Canary Island date palms around a concrete-lined pond with water jets, which led to the park's signature name. However, the fountain eventually deteriorated, and the area became overgrown. In the late 1990s, the community rallied to revitalize the park, opposing plans to turn it into a retail complex. The Splash Pad Neighborhood Forum played a crucial role, leading to the hiring of Oakland-based landscape architect Walter Hood. Hood's design transformed the space into a flexible park that supports a variety of uses. The redesigned park officially opened on October 20, 2003. Today, Splash Pad Park is known for its Saturday farmers' market, drawing crowds and fostering a strong sense of community. The park also features a wood-paved gathering space with illuminated lights and a water wall with sparkling jets. It serves as a forecourt to the historic Grand Lake Theater and provides a pleasant place to relax.
