Founded in 1852, Tin How Temple stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of San Francisco's Chinese community. The temple is dedicated to Mazu, known as Tin How or “Empress of Heaven” in Cantonese, the goddess of the sea who is believed to protect seafarers, fishermen, and those in distress. For Chinese immigrants making the perilous journey to America, Mazu offered strength and guidance.Originally located at the corner of Post and Mason Streets, the temple was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. Only the statue of the goddess, the temple bell, and part of the altar survived. In 1910, the Sue Hing Benevolent Association rebuilt the temple at its current location on Waverly Place. The temple closed in 1955 but reopened in 1975, coinciding with a rejuvenation of Chinatown following the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965.Today, Tin How Temple occupies the top floor of a four-story building. Visitors climb three flights of stairs to reach the serene sanctuary. Inside, the air is thick with the scent of incense, and the vibrant décor includes red banners, lanterns, and shrines. Mazu's shrine takes center stage, flanked by deities like Guan Gong, the God of Wealth, and Lady Golden Flower. Visitors can observe traditional rituals, make offerings, and seek guidance using divination sticks. Photography is not allowed inside. From the balcony, visitors can enjoy a bird's-eye view of Chinatown.
