Discover more about Berkeley Rose Garden

Nestled in the Berkeley Hills, the Berkeley Rose Garden is a tranquil escape offering a feast for the senses. This 3.64-acre park, designed as a terraced amphitheater, boasts over 1,500 rose bushes representing more than 100 varieties, with peak bloom in mid-May. The garden's location in a canyon, originally named El Valle de los Codornices (Valley of the Quails), adds to its unique charm. Constructed between 1933 and 1937 as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, the garden provided employment during the Great Depression. Landscape architect Vernon M. Dean designed the garden in a rustic style, incorporating a redwood pergola and semi-circular stone-walled terraces. The East Bay Counties Rose Society, led by Charles V. Covell, carefully selected the roses, arranging them by color on the terraces. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge from the garden. The park also features tennis courts, hiking trails, and a picnic area. Codornices Creek runs through the garden, feeding an ornamental pool. The Berkeley Rose Garden is a popular venue for weddings and events and is considered one of the finest rose gardens in Northern California.
