From Residential Edge to City Centre

The area now called Uptown developed as Oakland expanded northwards from its nineteenth-century commercial core. Streets around Broadway, San Pablo Avenue and Telegraph Avenue became part of a growing urban district of houses, shops, offices and civic institutions, shaped by streetcars and the city’s rising population. The name Uptown is relatively modern in popular usage and refers broadly to the area north of Downtown rather than to a historic municipality or precisely fixed administrative unit. Its central position allowed commercial and entertainment uses to intensify during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, leaving a mixture of older low-rise buildings and later office and apartment development.

Broadway’s Interwar Theatre Era

Uptown acquired much of its present architectural drama during the 1920s and early 1930s, when large cinemas and theatres reflected the commercial confidence of American cities. The Tribune Tower was completed in 1924, the Fox Oakland Theatre opened in 1928, and the Paramount Theatre opened in 1931.
