Annie's Canyon Trail: A Coastal Slot Canyon Adventure

Annie's Canyon Trail, also known as the Mushroom Caves by locals, is a hidden gem within the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve in Solana Beach, California. This unique trail offers a memorable hiking experience, squeezing through a narrow sandstone slot canyon with rewarding views. Formed over millions of years by wind and water erosion, the canyon features towering, curved walls with striated lines. Once a local secret spot prone to vandalism and misuse, a generous donation from a supporter named Annie enabled the Nature Collective to restore the area and open it to the public in 2016. The 1.6-mile round trip hike presents two route options at the canyon's base: navigate through the narrow slot canyon or ascend via a switchback trail. The slot canyon route involves scrambling and climbing through tight spaces, and up a short ladder, making it unsuitable for those with claustrophobia or large dogs. The switchback trail offers a less strenuous but still rewarding climb to the same viewpoint. At the top, hikers are treated to panoramic views of the San Elijo Lagoon, the Pacific Ocean, and the surrounding coastal landscape. The trail is open from sunrise to sunset year-round, offering a chance to witness the lagoon's diverse birdlife and native plants.
