Discover more about Doheny State Beach

Doheny State Beach, nestled in Dana Point, California, holds the distinction of being the state's first official state beach. Donated in 1931 by oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny, it has evolved into a beloved coastal destination attracting nearly one million visitors each year. The beach is divided into two main sections. The northern end boasts a popular surfing beach, known for its beginner-friendly waves, and a spacious five-acre lawn perfect for picnics and volleyball. The southern end features well-maintained campgrounds, some just steps from the sand, making it a sought-after spot for overnight stays. Doheny's history stretches back long before its state beach designation. The Acjachemen (Juaneno) tribe inhabited the area for thousands of years before European contact. Today, the park includes a visitor center with aquariums and educational programs that highlight the area's marine life and promote environmental conservation. Visitors can explore tide pools teeming with marine creatures, engage in surf fishing, or simply relax on the sandy shores. While the construction of Dana Point Harbor in the 1960s altered the surf conditions, Doheny remains a significant spot in surf culture, even inspiring mentions in surf rock songs by The Beach Boys and The Surfaris. Environmental conservation efforts are ongoing to protect the unique ecosystems, with initiatives focusing on habitat restoration, pollution reduction, and educational programs.
