Ellen Browning Scripps Park: La Jolla's Coastal Jewel

Ellen Browning Scripps Park, often called Scripps Park, is a beloved landmark in La Jolla, offering a picturesque blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Situated on a sandstone bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the 5.6-acre park provides breathtaking views and access to some of La Jolla's most stunning beaches, including La Jolla Cove, Shell Beach, and Boomer Beach. Originally part of a 400-acre purchase by Frank Botsford in 1886, the land was set aside for a public park in 1887, inspired by the City Beautiful Movement. The park was renamed in 1927 to honor Ellen Browning Scripps, a journalist and philanthropist who significantly contributed to La Jolla's development. Scripps's contributions extended to various community initiatives, including the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Scripps Memorial Hospital, and the La Jolla Woman's Club. The park's landscape features a 3.8-acre lawn, heritage plantings like Monterey cypress and Mexican fan palms, and a paved path offering scenic overlooks. It's a popular spot for picnics, weddings, and community events, drawing visitors with its stunning natural surroundings. According to the AAA, Ellen Browning Scripps Park is the most photographed spot in San Diego. The La Jolla Park Coastal Historic District, which includes the park, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 9, 2024.
