Discover more about Oceanside Civic Center Plaza

Oceanside Civic Center Plaza stands as a testament to Oceanside's commitment to public art and accessible green spaces. Designed by Charles Moore and the Urban Innovations Group, the plaza, completed in 1990, serves as a central gathering place for residents and visitors. The plaza's design draws inspiration from the early 20th-century architecture of Irving Gill, known for his simple, unadorned concrete structures. Moore incorporated Gill's signature white walls and concrete arcades while adding his own postmodern flair with vibrant colors and playful forms. The heart of the plaza features a large, colorful fountain reminiscent of Moore's Piazza d'Italia in New Orleans. The fountain's intricate tile work and cascading water create a mesmerizing focal point, while surrounding palm trees provide shade. The open layout encourages visitors to stroll and relax. The plaza hosts various events throughout the year, including art shows, concerts, and cultural festivals. It is also home to the Oceanside Public Library. The Civic Center complex emulates the styling of Irving Gill, with white arches and simple architecture. Moore remarked, "We use his plain white walls, his unadorned concrete arcades, disciplined fenestration, and flat roofs as our architectural vocabulary, and then allow ourselves the exuberance of bright colors with tiles in niches at the entrances."
