Queen Califia's Magical Circle: A Mosaic Dreamscape
Discover the vibrant mosaic art of Niki de Saint Phalle at Queen Califia's Magical Circle in Escondido's Kit Carson Park, a unique sculpture garden inspired by California's mythic roots.
Queen Califia's Magical Circle, nestled within Escondido's Kit Carson Park, is a vibrant and enchanting sculpture garden created by the renowned French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle. This unique art installation, her only American sculpture garden and last major international project, showcases nine large-scale mosaic sculptures inspired by California's mythic and cultural roots. Visitors are greeted by a 400-foot-long 'snake wall' adorned with colorful serpents, leading into a maze of black, white, and mirrored tiles. The garden's centerpiece is the imposing figure of Queen Califia herself, standing atop a five-legged eagle, surrounded by totemic sculptures reflecting Native American, Pre-Columbian, and Mexican art. Open limited hours and free to the public, the Magical Circle offers a captivating experience for art lovers and families alike, a testament to de Saint Phalle's vision of accessible and interactive art.
