Torrey Pines Golf Course: Where Golf Meets the Pacific

Torrey Pines Golf Course is more than just a golfing destination; it's a landmark where the sport meets breathtaking natural beauty. Situated on the cliffs of La Jolla, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the 36-hole municipal golf facility boasts both the North and South courses, offering challenging play and stunning vistas. The course's history dates back to World War II when the land was part of Camp Callan, a U.S. Army training center. After the war, the City of San Diego recognized the potential of the coastal property and developed it into a public golf course. Designed by William P. Bell and his son, William F. Bell, Torrey Pines opened in 1957 and quickly gained a reputation for its challenging layout and ocean views. The course is named after the rare and protected Torrey Pine tree, native to the area. Since the late 1960s, Torrey Pines has hosted the PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open, drawing top golfers annually. The South Course has also hosted U.S. Open Championships in 2008 and 2021, solidifying its place among the nation's premier golf destinations. The South Course underwent restoration, including lengthening it to nearly 7,600 yards. The North Course was renovated in 2016. Beyond the sport, Torrey Pines offers a restaurant with course-side views and a well-stocked golf shop. Visitors can walk the course, enjoying the scenery.
