Discover more about Serra Cross

Perched atop a hill in Ventura's Grant Park, the Serra Cross is more than just a monument; it's a symbol of the city's history and a testament to its enduring spirit. The cross stands on the site where Father Junipero Serra, a Spanish missionary, planted a wooden cross in 1782 during the founding of Mission San Buenaventura. This marked the ninth and final mission established by Serra in California. The original cross served as a beacon for travelers arriving by land or sea, guiding them to the Mission. Over the centuries, the cross has been lost to the elements and replaced several times. The current cross, erected in 1941, is the fourth to stand on this historic spot. It has become a Ventura Historic Landmark and a California Historical Landmark. In 2017, the Thomas Fire swept through the surrounding park, causing widespread devastation, but the cross miraculously survived with only minor damage. Today, Serra Cross Park is a one-acre parcel within the larger Grant Park, offering visitors a place to connect with nature and history. The park provides panoramic views of Ventura, the Pacific Ocean, and the Channel Islands, making it a popular spot for sunset viewing, hiking, and picnicking.
