Start early to avoid crowds and the desert heat, especially during peak season (September-May).
Bring plenty of water (at least 3 liters) as there is no water available along the trail.
Wear sturdy hiking boots and use trekking poles for the descent into the canyon.
Consider arranging a car shuttle if hiking the entire trail to avoid a strenuous return hike.
Check the weather forecast before heading out, as conditions can change rapidly in the desert.

The trail begins near the park's West Entrance, at the Keys West Backcountry Camping Registration parking area, also the trailhead for Willow Hole Trail. The initial miles meander through a relatively flat landscape dotted with Joshua Trees, creosote bushes, and various cacti, offering glimpses of San Gorgonio Mountain in the distance. As you venture further, the landscape transforms into the Wonderland of Rocks, a mesmerizing expanse of granite boulders and rock piles. The trail descends over 1,000 feet, leading you through a rocky canyon towards Indian Cove. This section features switchbacks and stunning views, requiring careful footing due to loose gravel. The change in elevation also introduces a shift in vegetation, transitioning from the high Mojave Desert ecosystem to the lower Colorado Desert, characterized by yucca, creosote, and cholla cactus. The Boy Scout Trail offers a diverse hiking experience, from the iconic Joshua Trees to the unique geological formations of the Wonderland of Rocks.
